Windsurfing
Windsurfing The ‘Algarvian Barlavent’, it's the windiest zone in Algarve, from May until September it offers excellent conditions for Windsurfing and Kitesurfing, the predominant wind during this time is northwest. Usually during morning the wind strength is between 10/20 knots, increasing at 2pm to 25/40 knots, except certain days that the wind is constant from southwest with 10 to 30 knots. I would say for windsurfers you need to pack your big sails to cover the 15-20knt windrange down to about 5m. During winter usually the wind arrives from southwest with 15 to 35 knots. Sometimes the wind is from the southeast (from North Africa) with 10 to 40 knots of strength.
Windsurf & Kitesurf Spots
Praia da Rocha: (20 minutes from Casa Pomar)
Windsurf
The summer season is ideal for the Formula Windsurfing or Freeride, it's one of the finest courses for Formula Windsurfing in Europe.
In the Winter season it's supposed to bea good spot for wave sailing. I have never sailed it but you can see that in the an SSE or West it could work. Anything else will be either onshore or off the land with big hotels to block the wind
Kitesurf
In summer its too busy, but in the Winter it's good for
sailing in waves. |

Alvor: (15 minutes from Casa Pomar)
Windsurf
Summer is ideal for Freeride and Slalom, good bump & jump stuff.
Kitesurf
In the summer season you'll find this the perfect spot, the wind blows from the opposite direction of the pier and the water is mirror flat.
Winter is waves. |

Ria de Alvor: (15 minutes from Casa Pomar)
Windsurf
A lagoon connected to the sea, this spot is good for learning to windsurf and or Slalom, Freeride or Freestyle. This is one of my favorite places. Flat as a pancake, you can pick your depth to try that new manouvre in and just step back on the board if it goes wrong. The wind works in most directions
Kitesurf
This lagoon is ideal for learing to kitesurf, be careful during the winter as the winds get very gusty when it rains, with variations between 15 to 30 knots.
Accessed from Lagos via the road that runs along Meia Praia beach. After about 2 miles cross the rail tracks on the right. Carry on, skirt the edge of the lake driving across the sand until you get to a narrow, very potholed causeway linking you to the outer sandbanks. There is only one road, you will know it when you see it. |

Meia Praia: (10 minutes from Casa Pomar)
Windsurf
Meia-Praia is situated in Lagos and in the summer it's a great place for flat water Slalom, Freeride or Freestyle, with 5 Km
of flat water.
It needs a strong northerly to be decent but its good for flat water stuff when the wind is strong enough. I have surfed it in the winter which is pretty good but never managed to get decent wind with waves yet. I think you would need a SSE direction for cross-shore as the wave break is very close to Lagos wherre the beach sweeps around from South to East
Kitesurf
In summer it's experts only as the wind is very strong and
offshore, not advisable to inexperienced riders , in winter it's a good spot in southeast or southwest winds.

Martinhal (Sagres): (20 minutes from Casa Pomar)
Windsurf
In the summer season it's a perfect spot for Slalom, Freeride and Freestyle with strong winds and calm waters if the northerly is working. Don't bother in a Southerly as you get a large shore dump.
Kitesurf
In summer it's experts only as the wind is very strong and offshore, not advisable to inexperienced riders, and in winter the conditions few and far between at Martinhal. |

Tonel (Sagres): (20 minutes from Casa Pomar)
Windsurf
The ideal season for windsurfing in summer, the best months are July and August. During this period north wind blows offshore in "Martinhal" beach. I have only sailed it once, I had been looking forward to it for ages as Tonel get 10ft + waves regular. When I got the call that it was working I chucked the wave kit in and got down there. Unfortunately the wind was certainly getting in to Tonel but blowing the waves falt at the same time, doh! I'll be interested in someone who has had a good day, I can't see it.
Kitesurf
Because of the size of the beach it's extremely dangerous for kitesurfing.
